First, let me say that I've never done yoga (besides a few times on my Wii Fit), taken a class, nor have I ever used a mat. My mom and I have signed up for a class and needed mats promtly. Being that neither one of us have done yoga, I decided to buy a "cheap" mat. This cost me $12-something. I unrolled it and it has a slight plastic smell, but that's already faded after being out for a week or so. It's thick. It's comfy. I can tell I'm going to like it. And you know what?
